About

Hello!
My name is Thirzah, and I make stuff. I’m delighted to meet you. I have been drawing, sewing and generally making a mess with art and crafts for all of my 30+ years on Earth, and I’ve been obsessed with everything dark and spooky for just as long! Amongst the Gorse is the culmination of this.

Amongst the Gorse sells embossed copper pieces, textile art and lino prints inspired by British history and folklore. Drawing on English folklore and medieval artwork, I make creative and decorative pieces for the home using a mix of traditional and unusual techniques - including sewing into real copper.

I love to push the boundaries of what my vintage hand-cranked Singer machine will sew (and the boundaries of my luck, let’s be honest) and you can often find me playing a game of “will it sew?” Materials that I have had success with include balsa wood and thin sheets of copper – which I also use for my hand embossing – and ones that have beaten me include tree bark and, weirdly, overly thick fabric. Elsewhere I use hand and machine embroidery, quilting and other techniques to create my work out of natural materials like cotton and silks.

I adore lino printing and creating illustrations – especially black and white prints. My favourite moment is when I ink up a new design for the first time and get to watch it come to life. I’m always working on something new - often inspired by a random snippet of conversation or an earworm - and I’m currently working on illustrating some ambitious new projects, so watch this space…
